Le train fut TRES long ! 22h !
Start of our road trip in Sweden, Finland and Norway.
First day of the holiday is spent on a train from Gothenburg to northern Sweden and the city of Kiruna. 22 hours to be somewhat exact. Kiruna itself is not a very nice city but caught in an interesting time. Kiruna is supportet by a huge underground mine (iron ore) which makes a lot of many. However, because of the mining activity (they're going in direction of Kiruna), the city itself has to be moved - yeah - the whole damn city! We did visit the mines when we returned and it was VERY interesting. We picked up a Renault Mégane Kombi, our rental car for 15 days and headed out into the wild. First stop Jukkasjärvi and a visit to a Sami open air museum. The we countinued until we found a great little area for camping next to a lake - and hardly any mosquitoes!
Day two we drove throught Finland avoiding the damn reindeer who keep walking on the road with no worries at all. Late afternoon we arrived and Lyngen Alps in Norway. We are VERY far north by now and yet we had over 20C during the evening - an evening and night which never turn dark. It was still the midnight sun. We camped close to a fjord and enjoyed the scenery - something we would do every day.
We spent another day in and around Lyngen Alps discovering the landscape before we headed into Tromsö - northern Norway largest city with a population of about 60 000 people. Tromsö is a city of records - worlds most northern university, worlds most northern brewery, worlds most northern botanical garden etc etc etc. The first night we were very lucky with blue sky and perfect conditions to see the midnight sun. We headed up in the mountains and did a short climb to see the sun that never sets. It's simply magic! We stayed in Tromsö for four day with my aunt Aude and her husband Tore - hte perfects hosts spoiling us with salmon, cloudberry, reindeer among other things! During the day we went around to discover the areas around Tromsö, among them Sommaröy where we did a small hike up a mountain and again to be awestruck by the scenery. When time came to an end we took the small ferry from Kvalöya to Senja, the next part of our trip.
